About Us

Our History

  • 1962

An entrepreneur and an innovator, Roslyn S. Jaffe saw the opportunity to provide wear-to-work dresses and clothing for the working woman during a time in the U.S. when women were entering the workforce in greater numbers and there were few options for buying more stylish and affordable workplace women’s clothing. Along with her husband, Elliot, she opened the first dressbarn store in February 1962.

  • 2005

Recognizing an opportunity to expand the portfolio to serve women in smaller, rural markets, dressbarn acquired the maurices brand in 2005.

  • 2009

In 2009, we expanded into the girls’ clothing market by purchasing Tween Brands, the owner of the Justice chain.

  • 2011

In January 2011, to reflect the Company’s broader holdings, we reorganized our structure and formed ascena retail group, inc., as a holding company for our assortment of retail brands.

  • 2012

One year later, ascena continued to grow the portfolio by acquiring Lane Bryant and Catherines brands in 2012.

  • 2015

Then in 2015, ascena acquired ANN INC., the parent company of retail brands Ann Taylor, LOFT and Lou & Grey.

Since that time, ascena has reinvented itself as a collective of brands that is an agile competitor in the transforming retail industry.
